ax15 question
I am talking to this guy on craigslist about an ax15. He says it is coming out of a 87 or so 4 cylinder model. I cant really find anything different from the ax15 they put behind the 6 cylinder vs. the one they put behind the 4 cylinder in the earlier model jeeps. Does anyone know?
The reason I am trying to obtain this information is because I am looking to convert my 2x2 to a 4x4. I have a 98 yj 231 that mated to a ax15 and now I need the transmission that will mount to it. I know that the ax15 are behind the 6 cylinders listed below but never looked to much at the ones behind the 4 cylinders. Would appreciate any incite on the matter but in the mean time I will keep looking. Thanks for any advice in advance!
Model Engine Years
Cherokee 4X2 4.0L / 242 1989 - 1999
Cherokee 4X4 (XJ / MJ) 4.0L / 242 1989 - 1999
Comanche Pickup 4X2 4.0L / 242 1989 - 1992
Comanche 4X4 (XJ / MJ) 4.0L / 242 1989 - 1992
Grand Cherokee (ZJ) 4.0L / 242 1993 - 1994
Wrangler (YJ) 4.0L / 242 1989 - 1999
Jeep XJ, YJ & TJ 4.0L / 242 1988 - 1999

The AX15 only came behind the 4.0.
AX5's behind the 4cylinder.
Got pictures of it?
From the interweb:
"The Aisin Warner AX15 transmission is a medium-duty, standard shift, five-speed transmission introduced in the 1988 (mid-year) YJ Wrangler and XJ / MJ Cherokee / Comanche Jeeps, and found in 1988-1999 Jeep Chreokee and Wrangler models. Its only year in the ZJ Grand Cherokee was 1993 and only with the six-cylinder. The AX15 was used in 6 cylinder engines after 03-03-89 to 1999 and has an aluminum intermediate plate."
"The AX-15 is a medium duty five speed transmission with an aluminum case. It is manufactured by Aisin in Japan and, although they are not compatible, the same model transmission is used in some Toyota trucks. In 1994 the clutch slave cylinder was moved to the outside of the bellhousing, so these AX-15s have a different input bearing retainer to accommodate the different throwout bearing. The input shaft is also slightly different, so a different pilot bushing is used. All AX-15s have a 1 1/8" 10 spline input shaft and a 23 spine output shaft.
Usage
The AX-15 was first used in Cherokees (XJ) and Comanches (MJ) with the 4.0L engine. In mid 1989, the AX-15 was used in Wranglers (YJ) with the 4.2L engine and it continued to be used with the 4.0L engine. The first year of the Grand Cherokee (ZJ), the AX-15 was rare option only with the 4.0L engine. The AX-15 is still used in TJs and XJs with the 4.0L engine."
I would say that dude has an AX5...

I think i am going to agree with you. I got the same information that you did but cant find anything on the 4 cylinders having a ax15. There is always talk about adapter kits that you can buy that will allow the ax15 to adapt to the jeep 4 cylinder. Ill see if I can still get pics.
