i have an 88 Cherokee 4.0, originally automatic ut the previous owner swapped an AX15 from a new (95 i believe) Cherokee into it, he told me third and fourth gear were grinding occasionally but he still drove it daily
it did indeed grind but i had n problem driving it everywhere, until a few days ago, shifted into fourth, normal driving, clutched for a redlight and tried to take it out of gear, stuck in fourth..could not get it out no matter what i did
tore it apart yesterday and discovered the transmission was full of what appears to be 90w gear oil, fluid drained looked clean, no metal, once we separated the case, more oil drained out full of brass shavings, i assume the syncros? the fork was stuck, the black band seems to have worn a grove into it but im not sure if its just made that way?, the syncros look pretty eat up as well, had to tap the shift rod with a hammer to free the transmission up
i cannot seem to find another AX15 in central florida, so my question is.. would a rebuild kit do it? would just replacing the syncros and whatever else comes in the kit fix the problem, i apologize for the large pictures, not sure how to make them smaller
Once, years ago a wrecker in Portland put the Audi 1/2 shaft I need on a Greyhound, and 400 miles away I had my axle in a day'n 1/2. (might have been less)
