Hey all - I got it off easily but now that everything's back together I can't figure out how to secure the outer shift boot. What am I missing here? I know the boot should fit around that plastic bezel but I just can't seem to make it work.
Ok I am getting MAJOR league frustrated by this. Seems like the bezel should be raised up so the rubber lip around the bottom of the boot can get underneath it - here's some pics to show how that's basically impossible due to some ghetto-rigging by a PO. Here's the back end:
What irritates me is that before I pulled the shifter, I had to pull this boot out first, and it seemed to be very secure. How on earth did they get it to stay on this bezel??? And what the hell do I do to get it to stay on??
Well nevermind, my girlfriend who doesn't know absolutely the first thing about cars just spent 2 minutes with it and kind of pushed it down into the hole and then pulled it out a bit and it's as good as it's ever been. I still don't totally understand what she did but it's perfect, so case closed. I guess I need to clean the bathrooms and cook dinner tonight
Your problem is that the two upward-facing screws added by the previous owner are blocking the lip from securing on that edge. Ideally the entire outer circumference of the plastic bezel engages with the rubber boot.
