I have a 1985 jeep XJ, after letting it sit while the motor was being rebuilt and other problems being fixed I started having problems with my four wheel drive. The jeep set for about 2 months before i got it back on the road. When i would put it in four wheel drive something in the front made a real bad sounding noise when i would take off. Its about like a clunk. It did this in four low and four high. After disengaging four wheel drive the noise went away, two wheel was fine! Well Its been a while since i went through all that but the other morning im riding down the road and it started making the racket again. This time im not in four wheel drive. The noise sounds like its coming from the left front hub, but im not too sure. I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems like this with their XJ. I wanna see if i can get an idea as to whats goin on before i go tearing it apart.

Check the wheel hub itself. Jack up the front and see if the wheel moves back and forth top to bottom. Very common problem on XJ's.

 

did u break a u joint. otherwise definitly check out your wheel hub

It quit makin the racket again.
