Default AW4 swap to A340

I’ve been reading online about how the aw4 that comes in the earlier jeep XJ’s are pretty similar to Toyota’s a340, and I just can’t quite find the answer to if it would be possible to make this swap possible without having to do a bunch of other stuff and I was wondering if anyone would happen to be able to give me some insight on this

Yes they are very similar

They have an advantage in that they are controlled by a stand alone Transmission Computer module TCM

What application do you have in mind

I’m looking into swapping out the aw4 from my 1990 xj with an a340 to handle the higher horsepower from a 4.6l engine I’m looking to get from newcomer racing

The Supra A341E and the Jeep AW4 are nearly the exact same transmission other than the bellhousing, tail housing and the converter. There are a few other insignificant differences within the clutch packs and valve body. All common supra upgrades apply to the Jeep units, like the billet forward piston, second gear sprag assembly, Raybestos red frictions and Transgo shift kit/ billet accumulator pistons. New frictions and a mild shift kit to increase line pressure are the only necessary upgrades unless power is over 1000HP. At that point, you would be better off with a well built 727 AMC bolt pattern that can handle 2000 HP. This is why Supras are all either stock trans or Turbo 400. But if you are planning on spending the $10+K on Newcomer's engine you may be willing to send your core to ATFSpeed or IPT Performance for a thorough rebuild. What fuel will you be running and what ECU? Haltech Elite is the only ECU with a plug and play A340 controller. RAdesigns has an excellent manual shifter, no ECU required, with OD/lock-up solenoid push button control.
