Default AW4 Shift Shaft question

Ok, let me see if I can explain my question. The shift linkage on the AW4 connects to a shaft that runs through the transmission on the drivers side. That same shaft then connects to the NSS(neutral safety switch) on the passenger side of the transmission. My question is, does that shaft connect to anything in between the two sides, inside the transmission? Such as valves in the valve body, electrical connections, linkages etc. I would think the parking pall connects to this shaft. Since the transmission is mostly controlled by electric solenoids, I’m just wondering if that shaft controls anything besides a way to control the NSS and parking pall. I haven’t had an opportunity to look at one yet myself so if anyone could enlighten me, I’d appreciate it 😋

That shaft (manual valve shaft) has a toothed sector (shift sector) on it. When you shift gears, the shift sector operates a valve (manual valve) in the valve body. The valve opens or closes passages depending on which gear has been selected. As the shaft is rotated, so is the NSS, which tells the TCM what gear the transmission is in. That shaft does not operate, nor connect to, the shift solenoids. The TCM does that. The parking pawl is on its own shaft at the rear of the transmission, which is operated by a second rod (park rod) that runs from the parking pawl shaft to the shift shaft up front.

In short, the shift shaft gets the transmission into position. The NSS tells the TCM what that position is, and the TCM operates the shift solenoids based on those positions.

Thanks! So if I read this right the only manuel function of the shaft is to manipulate one valve in the valve body to tell it you want a forward or reverse gear. Then the electric solenoids take over and shift according the computer and the position of the NSS switch. Is that correct?
The reason I’m curious is I’m wondering if there’s a way to mod the NSS to provide a second gear lock without resorting to an external switching apparatus.
In other words a 1-2-3 shift pattern with perhaps a switch to shift into overdrive.
