aw4 question....quick and simple...i hope
I have a 97xj sport automatic. Was just curious if there is a way to either do away with or bypass the transmission computer....and just have it operate like all transmissions did before computers.

Auto tranny has far more complex mechanical components.....in order to make things automatic. A manual in turn has the clutch and the stick. They are two totally different setups.

I don't think he's talking about making it a stick. I think he's taking about making it like a hydromechanical automatic, like a 1970s TorqueFlite. The only way to do that would be to replace it with a 1970s TorqueFlite.

You can find the schematics for building an AW4 manual override (paddle shift, basically) at the bottom of this page about modifying the TCU for 1st gear lock-out and TC lockup.

Yes you can.
What is it you want to do with your auto?
You will still have the shift lever and can have a small 'shifter' to control the 1-4 manually.

I checked out radesidnsproducts.com ...thanks for that info...just to make sure cuz it seems like i may of worded my question bad. I have a 97xj sport automatic. I will be rebuilding the aw4 shortly. I want to know if i can basically get rid of all the computer controls and use my aw4 without any transmission computer. Or in other words. Make it work like any automatic transmission before they were computer controlled.

Personally....i just perfer to get rid of all the computerized crap if possible. I understand computers on the engine for the fuel injection. I understand the need for that computer. But automatic transmissions work just fine without a computer controlling it. And since i will be rebuilding my transmission soon.....just figured now would be the time to scrap the transmission computer if possible and if not too difficult.

Is there something wrong with your computer that makes you think it is crap? In general, they are not crap and last as long as any other part. Just because they're complex doesn't mean they're fragile.

No...my transmission computer works fine. I have a bad nss but thats a different story. I just figured if i could somewhat easily do away with the computer and computer controlled parts and have it work properly...id honestly perfer it. I have no beef with the computer system in place....and its currently working properly. Just dont honestly understand the point. Automatic transmissions worked fine before computers. I understand computer controlled fuel injection which adds gains and benefits...(im sure someone will beat me up for saying this but) to me....it just seems like expensive gizmos that will eventually fail...i know you can take some computer controlled transmissions and remove the shift silinoids and computer and they will work properly. Just didnt know about the aw4. Just my preference.
