Chrysler et al are pretty agresssive about people or forums posting service manuals online. Posting a small piece or diagram is usually okay, but posting whole sections of the manual or direct download links will bring the forum unwanted attention, and sometimes legal action.

OOPS! I've been doing that for years! Didn't know it was a problem. Maybe that's why the link I give calls it a Full Service Manual instead of "Factory."

probably they cant bully the big companies
out here in Ozstralia, you cant free download a Holden Commodore manual off the forums, presumably for that reason
Causing me to spend $12 for an Ebay copy...beats $450 from the Dealer

1995 jeep xj
Hi everyone so I have a 1995 jeep xj. The jeep is having tranny problems when you put it into drive everything starts off fine and it seems when you get into higher rpms it does not want to shift anymore and feel like it stays in that one gear and makes the motor rev up if I dont rev match whatever gear it's in but even then it still struggles. So I unplugged one of the transmission wires I dont know the name of plug anyways, and the jeep will let you shift manually and everything seems fine. I just dont get it at all I need some help I did the tcu and Throttle position sensor and still same I dont understand.

Shifts hard maybe one two times after going about 4 miles. Rest of day fine.
Where are the 3 solenoids located. My 2000 xj has 234000 miles. Need replacing any way

But I still say the symptoms are that an old transmission should just have new solenoids.

As I read through this AW4 correct fluid form I didn't hear any mention of replacing the transmission filter, any reason? Can a straight Mercon fluid be used?

The filter is just a metal screen meant to catch and large debris and generally doesn't need replaced. If you have to drop the pan to replace solenoids, you can just hose it out with some solvent. No, Mercon is not acceptable. Use Dexron-III or compatible. Using ATF4+ has been hotly debated in the past. The dealer has a service bulletin advising to use ATF4+ and there are lots of people using it, but just as many people swearing you shouldn't.

P0740 code 1999 XJ
1999 Cherokee Sport. 6 cyl. 250,000. Original motor and transmission. Unmodified. Was shifting fine, although from park to R or D it is a little harsh. Shifts otherwise are smooth.
I had the P0740 code on my Jeep. I replaced all 3 transmission solenoids, and completely changed out the fluid (drained and filled 3x). I drive it for a few hundred miles, then had somebody reset the check engine light. I tried to get it to pass emissions but it was too soon, and I had to drive it 50 miles.
After about 20 miles the light came back on. Same code- P0740.
What else could it be? I need to get this damn thing to stay off so I can get it to pass emissions.
