1997 Cherokee 4.0 w AW4 auto trans........
Has happened 3 or 4 times now. After driving for over an hour at hwy speeds (55+) the trans will lose 3rd gear and OD.
Let it sit for 10 minites or so, and they come back.
Short drives are fine, no problems at all. Longer it sits after losing the gears longer it goes before losing them again.

I had a problem a few years back with losing 1st and 2nd, and it was shift solenoids. Bought an e--bai set w 4 solenoids gasket and filter. (made in china no doubt)

Is it possible these are failing again? or something worse?

Just saw another thread with the same complaint. Turns out it was just underfilled.....

A failing solenoid won't cause you to lose 4th gear, and both shift solenoids are off for 4th.
