96 classic auto. how do i know if i have an "aw4" what trans fluid do i use? atf or mercon stuff?

All the autos used in cherokees where aw4's except for the models with the 2.8 v6 as far as I know... I BELIEVE the correct fluid is dexronIII/mercron but If im wrong someone will correct me...
