I have read through a few threads and done some searching about this transmission. I am almost positive that i have a AW-4 trans.
1990 4 door XJ
I6 4.0
NP231 T-case.
auto trans - power/comfort switch
anyways...I am running stock axles and gears with 35's...I do not crawl and rarely does it get beat up on hills.
it had a problem with changing gears on me at speeds above 50. Im assuming going in and out of OD because of the gear ratio...
just recently it has now come to sit in the garage because when driving a steady speed above 30mph it will randomly shift into first, then kick into nutral.
it wont go back into gear until i have come to a stop, or 2mph (roughly)
my thought was the power/comfort switch messing with the gear change.
or...a fluid issue...
about 2k miles ago it had a flush and new filter.
the fluid is clean, smells fine, and is at perfect levels with no leaks.
anyone else have ideas or had this happen?

I'd adjust the TV cable first, then check your brake switch. If the brake switch is out of adjustment it can cause it to kick out of OD and unlock the torque converter.
I had similar symptoms with my 91 XJ. I drove down the road and held the brake pedal UP by placing my left foot underneath the pedal. With the constant UP pressure on the pedal, I experienced no problems whatsoever. It turns out it was indeed just the brake light switch needing adjustment-it was causing the torque converter to lock and unlock, causing surges and other problems.
