Im getting very conflicting reports on what tranny fluid the Cherokee needs. Just to clarify without any doubt will someone please tell me what transmission fluid a 1991 Cherokee Laredo needs? Chrystler wants me to buy ATF 4, Napa wants me to buy high milage dexron. Im very confused... -.-

 

Dextron!! Dextron!! Dextron!! I used atf+4 in my aw-4 and it almost tore my tranny to shreds. Luckily i swapped it woth dextron, then had to dp it again because there was still more in there. Also atf+4 clogged my filter and made me think my transmission was junk. Alao use lucas stop leak/stop hardshift. Made my tranmy like new. The aw-4 isnt made by chrysler so it takes dextron

 

Dexron III, they where designed for dexron II, most plugs have "DII" stamped into them.

Theyre made by aisin-warner... but used in toyotas.

 

You are both correct....

Aisin-Warner was partially owned by Toyota... The AW-4 appeared in some Toyota cars as the A30-40L(IIRC)

 

And Nissan, mazda, and many others too.

 

Ive had good luck with Wal-Mart brand Supertech Dexron3/Mercron ATF in high and low mileage AW-4 trannies. Low mileage AW-4s do not see as much of a difference in shifting/performance with higher end ATF, so I use the cheaper Dexron3/Mercron ATFs in everything, often.
