Default Automatic Tranny problem after patching leak

So i changed my cracked radiator, and missed a clip that held one of the lines that carries tranny fluid. The rubber part of the hose (in between the metal lines) got a hole put in it from one of the wheels that turn the serpentine belt.

Had to drive it a mile or so before patching it. Tranny was ready to give out before i could stop. Had to gas it to 2000 rpm to get it to go. So I patched the leak with some duct tape, a piece of hose i split down one side, and a couple hose clamps.

No longer leaking at all. But seems like its slipping a little from 1st to 2nd, and takes a sec to go into gear when i switch between drive and reverse. So my question is: Did i damage my tranny, or is it just the patch that may be causing my issues? Dont wanna spend 100 bucks on a new line if my tranny is going.

Any suggestions? Would i be able to get someone to crimp a new rubber line in between the metal lines? Or should I just leave my patch and hope for the best. Thanks all....

Did you check the fluid level/condition?

You may have smoked the tranny. The slipping at high RPMs will burn the clutches up and they will lose some of the friction material. The loss of material will make the engagement take longer because of the extra void from the lost friction material. Duct tape is not the way to fix anything other than HVAC ducts. Transmission leaks? Not so much.

x2 on fluid level. i put new lines on mine from napa and i got both for about 50 bucks it will cost you more to have some one replace the rubber hose and recrimp them.

Yeah... just put in fresh fluid and the level was correct after the patch.

Update: after driving about 80 miles yesterday, still no leaks at the patch. But i'm definitely slipping occasionally in all gears.

It did what it had to do for emergency purposes... Had to get to work in a bit of a hurry after losing most of my tranny fluid and taking the time to patch. It's holding really well though. Looks like I'm going to be seriously thinking before doing any major repairs going forward.

give it another 100 miles and check the level/condition. If it doesn't change it's toasted.

So far I haven't been able to find anyone in the NYC area, (other than the dealer) who carries this hose, and they want $120 for it. If I can find it for anywhere near the 50 that you are taking about i'll def pick it up.

BTW: long time reader of the forum, first time I haven't been able to find an answer already discussed. Feel free to continue chiming in. I'm a bit of a newbie curbside mechanic. But ain't afraid to get my hands dirty.

Thanks for the info guys.

Not sure how much I lost, but it had to be pretty low. Added a little over 2 quarts. Just checked my fluid level again... Condition was fine... but I was about a quart low. Gonna check it again this afternoon since it seems to not be reading accurately right after I add it.

Maybe it's not in as bad of shape as I thought.

shouldn't be that bad... total capacity is 8 quarts. Tranny will work with 6 quarts.

after some hunting found the replacement line for $40. Fluid at proper level, and tranny seems to be shifting just fine.

Now if only I didn't have about 30 other things that I need to do to my jeep...
