Default automatic tranny not shifting

While driving to a buddys shop to do the brakes. I noticed my Cherokee wouldn't shift gears unless I redlined it. What could be the problem?

I'll note that the car is not legal yet and the people I bought it from had it sitting for a while. But this is the first time its done this.

Not to thread jack, but i have almost this same problem.

Could this cable also cause it not to shift period? With the jeep in drive it's really sluggish but once up to 40-50 it is pretty peppy. If I pull it down in 1, it takes off just fine then to 3 and drive following. Bought the jeep from my cousin and it's been setting a little over a year and he said he put a new detent cable and fluid. Is this cable the same as a detent cable?

your having an electronic issue, check the trans fuse on the fuse block [IIRC top right corner 7.5amp], then check under passenger side lower dash that box bolted to the lower dash is your TCU that controls the trans make sure its fully plugged in, there is also a fuse somewhere in that harness check it aswell.

when my automatic started to **** the bed i would have to pull the fuse and drive as you stated 1/2-3-D

the reason it doesnt pick up till 40-50 when your in D is cause its like your starting in overdrive

Is this the connector for the tcu. Found it tucked under the carpet connected to nothing but does have a fuse in the same harness

I haven't been able to check all your suggestions yet. But could a bad transmission mount be a factor?

No. If you have an 87 to 90, check what was already suggested.
