cleaned up the ballast resistor terminals, started right up. Drove it for about 20 minutes, got home. Shut it off. Started it again. Shut it off. Started it again. 3rd time tried to start, fuel pump didn't come on and now it won't start again. I shook/tapped on the pcm while it was running and nothing changed.
you cleaned up the ballast resistor to the fuel pump?
if so, i did away with mine as per instructions from a dodge dealership mechanic. said they do away with them all the time, they are only there to make the fuel pump a little quiter, but are not needed.
my pump is a little noisier, but not bad. mine has started everytime since. that thing is the reason i got this rig so cheap. lol original owner couldnt get the "no start" figured out.

just take the ballast resistor out, and hard wire the 2 wires from it together. mine would run about 10 minutes then die according to the p/o. and then it stopped starting all together, and that is why i ended up with it so cheap! lol and it had a new pump, injectors, and regulator already installed! he was throwin parts at it.
i tested the resistor first thing when i got it. it wasnt even putting 6 volts out. and i contacted a friend that is a mechanic at a dodge dealership about replacing it, and he said do away with it. not needed, they were only installed to limit pump noise.
so, i say hook your multimeter to it and see what output is on the resistor, and run it till it dies and see if the resistor is heating up and cause a restriction in voltage like mine was. i did a search on this when i got the xj home and after reading all the stuff that popped up i could see that is was common and it was also probably my problem.
also how i found all these great xj forums! lol sorry so long, hope it helps.

I had this happen to me out in the middle of the freakin' desert! Turns out, the problem was the front O2 sensor wires were shorting out, tripping the ASD. The insulation had gotten brittle and the wire was exposed inside the plastic loom. The problem was intermittent simply because the wires would randomly cross depending on the bumps I'd hit. I'd suggest to check that and other wiring associated with the system. It may not be your problem, but if it is, at least you're not replacing $200 parts. And you don't need to be a specialized mechanic to recognize burnt, exposed wires. Good luck!
any ideas on what could cause the pump to turn on 8 times in a row back to back and fire up, and now it wont start. if i let it rest for a half hour though the fuel pump will turn back on a few times, and then die out again.
I can drive my 91 xj for about 10-15 minutes and the suddenly it will just shut down. When i try and restart it, it cranks and cranks but will not fire. I swapped out the ASD relay with the AC relay and it fires right back up. What causes the ASD relay to keep failing?
