Automatic Locking doors
Hello.
I'm a first time poster here, but have lurked before.
I registered because I need an answer that many hours of Google has not gotten me anywhere but around to where I started.
A friends kid gave me his '90 Cherokee Limited, as he bought a newer truck.
So I have slowly been plunking along fixing things as I drive and find them.
BUT the one issue I cannot seem to resolve is the @#$%ing Door Locks that lock up as soon as you start the engine.
I discovered this to be a REAL problem as my hunting buddy and I were many many miles in the bush, with a running Jeep and the only key in the ignition.... and You guessed it.. the Doors Locked! Buddy had leaned in to start it, and closed the door!
Took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to break in, about 8 minutes to fashion tools (not an easy task when all you have is your hunting/camping gear) and about 30 seconds to open the door!
BUT, since then I have locked them in several more times.
I now feel it is time to disable the "AutoLock" feature, but for the life of me, I cannot find out how!
anyone have any suggestions? (Please... I've heard the "hide a key" one already)
Thanks.
What did we ever do before the internet?

Ummmm that doesn't sound like any kind of "value added" feature I've ever heard of (what a pain).
According to the manual, the power for the door locks is fuse position # 6 in the under dash fuse block. It shows as a 30A circuit breaker. It sounds like you either have a door lock switch that is always on or that someone had a problem with the circuit and decided to "re-wire" it. Oh boy!!! Good luck if the latter is the case.

but I can unlock them and they stay unlocked.
I will double check the switches to ensure they move freely
as for the fuse, if I pull it, will the engine start? it seems to have a disconnect if I Lock with the remote, but open with a key.
did these come with a remote lock or is mine aftermarket?
the brand on the fob is NOT Jeep....
perhaps the remote is malfunctioning?

i'm not familiar with the electronic door locks so someone confirm/deny what I say next...
do the door locks usually lock themselves when you put it in drive or go above a certain speed like in other vehicles? If so you may be looking at a faulty gear selector switch (NSS) or speed sensor.

Ignition controlled door locks are a common feature found in aftermarket alarms. Check under and around the steering column for black box about the size of two ciggarrette standing side by side with various groups of wires coming out of it. You can then google the model number + programming instructions or manual and change the settings, or your can disconnect it.
I've got a '95 XJ Sport and it has the same feature. As soon as I start the engine, all doors lock. It's a pain in the ***. I would prefer all manual everything (less stuff to go wrong) but I'm learning to live with it.
And I carry a spare ign key in my wallet, JIC.
