I am trying to change the fluid and filter on my tranny today. I always assumed it was the AW4. But im not sure.
According to the manual the AW4 takes Mercon ATF but there is also the 727 and 999 models that use Dexron II ATF.
Does anybody know how i can tell? I looked for the AW4 tag on the right side of the case but couldnt see it. I also saw no casting numbers on the left. The only marking I see is on the right side of the case which is AISIN 8980 6.

I believe the AW4 is the AISIN and if older model it would have the A904 which is a version of the Chyrsler 727.

Sorry its in my signature which isn't showing for some reason. Its a 91 4.0. Its a laredo with the tow package too. It has the comfort /power switch.
I believe everything from 88 to 01 in a auto is a aw4 the older ones used either a a604 or a 30rh. They all should take dex/mec either way. You can also look at the dipstick is saying the guild type on there also.

Dexron/Mercon III is what your AW4 takes.
- 1984–1986: Chrysler A904 three-speed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_transmission, used with 2.5 L I4 and 2.8 L I6
- 1987–2001: Aisin-Warner AW-4 four-speed automatic, used with 4.0 L I6
- 1994–2000: Chrysler 30RH three-speed automatic, used with 2.5 L I4

Once i started looking at fluid i realized dex and merc were more or less the same. But thanks for all the info. I'll be doing the filter and fluid tomorrow morning. And I'll keep that tranny info around for when i buy my next cherokee.
