Lurker's 1st post--search didn't reveal any ideas.

My 2002 Cherokee just started to make a clunking sound when the automatic transmission downshifts.

I noticed it first when driving uphill, it seemed to downshift, rev, then upshift. The next day back in town, I noticed that when slowing to 30mph, it would downshift, make a loud clunk sound, and hesitate for a split second.

It has about 140K miles without any transmission issues. If anyone has any ideas about what may be the cause, I'd love to hear from you. I suppose checking the fluid level is the first step.

 

Yes..checking the fluid is first...but next I would change the fluid and filter.

If you have done 140k without changing the fluid in the auto box then that is where you need to start.

Change the filter and oil ASAP as it should be done every 2 years as with all oils they only work for so long! Remember it has to do a lot of work without you really noticing how many times it changes gear!
