Default auto trans slipping?

hey guys, i have a problem that recently developed. i was up in the moutains a few weeks ago when my tranny started slipping on the way back. It feels just like a clutch going out. I let it cool down and then it was back to normal. Today i was driving it and it started slipping, but not gradually started, it just started.

I heard that you could adjust the bands? or does it need a rebuild?

thanks in advance, im new to the whole jeep thing so im still learning!

no bands in the AW4 to adjust, afaik.

I would buy a gallon (or two) of cheap dexronIII and start changing out the fluid, it might of got hot and just burnt the fluid (if it did, you might of gotten lucky).

Pull the plug, about 2 quarts should come out. Refill it with new fluid, do this once/twice a day until your gallon or two is gone. If your problem is not gone, it might be time for a junkyard trans.

the 4.0 is a i6 btw..

any clue what color the fuild might turn if it gets burnt? I just put about 2 quarts in it though, the upper tranny cooling line busted and leaked out so i just filled it until it showed full on the dipstick.

and if worst comes to worst and i need a new tranny, would a manual bolt up?

dark color, brownish black (Im colorblind, so it may actually be a different color) and odd "burnt" smelling.

a manual will bolt up, but IMO its more work than its worth. You would need a flywheel, clutch assembly, master, clutch pedal, ECU, and a bunch of other stuff, IIRC.

dont know, I have an auto. Only benefit I see is having more gears to choose from if you have to downshift on a hill (going downhill). Some people say you get better gas mileage.

when I did my fluid (changed out 2 gallons) I drove it about 10 miles then changed it and did that for a while. If you like, you could probably jack up the rear tires and put it in drive, or maybe even neutral, to circulate the fluid around.
