Auto trans manufacturers for older Cherokees
Hi all, Jeep noob here. I'm looking at buying a mid-1980's to late-1990's Cherokee or GC. I am assuming Mopar makes the auto trans nowadays. When did the conversion to Mopar trans occur? What did they use for auto trans before that, GM, Borg-Warner or?

Automatics:
The Aisin Warner AW4 was used with the 4.0L I6 from 87-01.
The Chrysler A904/30RH was used with the 2.5L I4 (very few 4-cyls had automatics).
84-86 XJs with the GM 2.8L V6 used the Chrysler A904.
Manuals:
The Aisin AX15 was used with the 4.0L I6 from 89.5-99.
The New-Venture NV3550 was used with the 4.0L I6 from 00-01.
The Peugeot BA10 was used with the 4.0L I6 from 87-89.
The Aisin AX5 was used with the 2.5L I4 from 84-00 and GM 2.8L V6 from 84-86.
The Aisin AX4 was used with the 2.5L I4 from 84-87 (I believe the AX4 was the base with the 4-cyl and the AX5 an option for these years).
The Borg-Warner T4/T5 were used in early 1984 only.
The Aisin Warner AW4 was also used in early 1993 model year ZJ Grand Cherokees, all other automatic Grand Cherokees used Chrysler transmissions (except newer models with Daimler or ZF transmissions). Some early Grand Cherokees had the AX15 manual, but manual Grand Cherokees are rare and the option was dropped after the first couple years (since most people don't want a manual in a "luxury" SUV).
