Default Auto to Manual Question?

Sorry for pestering about all the conversion to posts/questions, but this one is serious.

I found a guy on CL, he has a 5 speed out of 2wd 4.0 Cherokee XJ, but he doesn't have the driveshaft. I found a driveshaft from a 4.0 4x4 Comanche, if the splines match, do you think the driveshaft would work since I won't have the transfer case?

If the splines match up its certainly possible, length is what you have to consider. Too many factors that can influence between tranny/transfer case lengths, 2 door/4 door xj, short bed/long bed mj. Only way you will know for sure is to mount the tranny and measure the distance you have to work with between the output shaft and the axle, then you will know the correct driveshaft length you need.

No, two different lengths. And you'll have to get a 4wd transmission if you want to stay/ become 4wd

Forgive me for hijacking this (although it does relate); I have never understood why people say to convert from a 2wd to a 4wd you have to have a 4wd transmission? I honestly have never really poked around a 2wd enough to know but it would seem to me a transmission is a transmission, weather it be an aw4, ax-15 or ba/10; wouldnt it be the same exact transmission case regardless and from there either an extension housing for a 2wd or a transfer case for a 4wd is bolted on? Why would he need to find a 4wd tranny? I am not being confrontational in any way, I honestly would to know the answer as this has never made sense to me. Thanks

Tail shaft is different, so I guess you could tear the trans apart but its not worth the work with how cheap they are

Different main shaft and tail housing between 4x2 and 4x4 shaft most likely fit but length would be issue retubing would be necessary.

Ahh, gotcha. The tailshaft was the only thing I could possibly see as being an issue but even then it didnt make much sence (and still kinda doesnt) but I am am with accepting it as described and leaving it at that. Thanks for the clarification...and I agree, tearing a tranny apart to change that sounds like WAY too much work...simple is good. Thread hijack over, carry on
