Default atx shifter handle removal '96 cherokee

How do you remove the shifter handle off the atx shift lever on a '96 cherokee? The Factory Service Manual says to just pull it straight up. I tried that with the shifter button out, in, and in-between and no luck!

Put your hands on each side of the handle. Not on the handle, but under it, and with a good amount of force hit it with an upward motion. Don't wack yourself in the face with the handle when it flys off. They can be stubborn but they do come straight off.

Does it matter whether the shifter button is pushed in?

OK, thanks!

Got the handle off! Had to really whack it hard from underneath.

Thanks for your help!

Glad to hear that you did not give yourself a black eye in the process.
