Which ATF for a 88 Cherokee

Which ATF for a 88 Cherokee
Okay so im running into a problem. I was sure that an 88 Cherokee would take ATF 3. But i'm having trouble finding it. All I can find is ATF+4 which is synthetic. I really dont want to put the +4 in cause it is synthetic and the trans is on its last leg. Will the trans function properly with Dex/Merc? Any feed back i would appreciate.

The specs origionally called for Dexron II. That is no longer around so they recommend DexronIII/Mercon. DO NOT USE ATF+4! It will screw your trans up and you will have to flush all the fluid out...
