Any chance of a better closer photo? Looks almost like some kinds of sensor connector....
Driver's side. The only side with freeze plugs and manifolds.

"Left" as Flintstone called it. Left and right are always called as if you were sitting in the driver's seat.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it is a dead connector used on 2.5L engines for the power steering switch. Basically a pressure switch to idle up when power steering is at full lock and air conditioning is on. Assuming you have a 4.0L engine, it is not used.

Go to the forums, technical section, choose the appropriate section say, OEM XJ and create a new thread. On the IPAD app it looks like an email reply button

I'm pretty sure your 88 has the E-V1 connector on the knock sensor, same as on your injectors. The CTS there has a pigtail plug. Get those both hooked up right and working! (they both matter).

90 was the last year for the sensor that will retard the timing if you are "pre-detonating", Pinging. (or any other knock). You test it by knocking on it and see if the engine changes.

I'll add to the mystery, I have the same connector unplugged on my '97. But I think someone had it, I suspect it's for the temp sensor for the overhead console. It may exist in the wiring harness even if your vehicle doesn't have the console because they are wires that run through the firewall, and just like the cruise control they are there even when the option isn't.

Mine are also unplugged because someone took off the front of the Jeep before I bought it. Makes perfect sense though

Correct. When Chrysler started using their own injection system.

The power steering pressure switch looks like this:

It is only found on 4 cylinder engines and is located drivers side behind the power steering pump just over the motor mount and in the pressure hose from the pump.
It's purpose was to keep the idle speed up when you turned the steering wheel to full lock and had air conditioning running.

Chrysler has a generic harness they use to save cost that will fit both 4 and 6 cylinder engines. I am reasonably confident based on the shape of the switch end and your connector that is where it would go, if you had a 4 cylinder.
