anyone ever tow with a cherokee?
What HE is saying that it [I]IS[I] safe if you do it in a safe manner. And i would say 90% of the people driving an xj cant afford to go out and spend anywhere near 10k on a vehicle to just tow with.
AND im pretty sure these jeeps have a tow rating of 5000lbs.....which is almost double what they weigh so maybe check your manual before you open your mouth

Maybe read my post and notice I said UNDER $10K before you open your mouth.
I'm guessing you also think this is the best vehicle to tow with as well? Maybe you wanna drift yours, too, cuz its made to do everthing, right?

I own a 1992 F150 with a 5 speed manual. I paid $600 for it. Thats nowhere near $10k.

As the xj is my only vehicle, yes right now it is the best vehicle to tow with especially considering my other option is a camry. And i could and HAVE drifted with my xj in the rain at least. And honestly, that F-150 isn't going to tow any better than a 5 speed cherokee. We had a 94 F-150 5 speed that we pulled a car trailer with 2 zero turns on it at work and my 4 BANGER jeep pulled it just as well as the F150.....so not much of a leap for you there bud. And just like my jeep the F150 got pushed by the half ton a piece mowers on a trailer without trailer brakes. which are a key factor in towing heavy loads

haha wow. So not only do you act like a 12 year old, but you have the reading comprehension skills of one as well?
Take your **** back to middle school were it belongs, and read a little more carefully before you reply next time

How about you tell me exactly what I mis-read, Mr. Big Shot...

I've towed with my cherokee a few times, but never more than 3,000lbs. I wouldn't recommend heavy towing if it can be avoided. My cherokee did fine with a lawnmower and some equiptment but if I hooked a vehicle to it I'd say it'd be too much.

Anyway, back on topic.
My dad towed a 97 bayliner Capri with our 99 jeep Cherokee sport. The bayliner weighed about 2500lbs. The jeep towed it just fine at 60mph but stopping was difficult. One time after stopping the brakes were SMOKING and it smelled horrible (it was a long down grade).
Now it's used to tow 900lb and 750lb jetskis(not at the same time, we have single trailers) and the only time you notice them is at the gas pump...
My dad has said the only reason he did not get a tandem trailer is because of his experience of hauling the bayliner.
Personally I have seen all stock cherokee towing a 20 something foot pontoon boat boat. (that's a lot of freaking weight to put on a cherokee)

Well after reading all these threads I find that it was a waste of time to be reading all the arguing
. I to have towed with my XJ and I to agree that there are better tow vehicles out there but I think our Canadian friend said it best, you can tow heavy loads as long as you do it safely by properly setting up your tow rig. Well I just had to put my 2 cents in.

QUOTE=Jamie57;718044]Funny how this one posted and the one that showed up in my mail box are different. And I haven't been called "little" since I was 12.
What you and some others are missing is that the XJ is a capable tow rig set up properly and If I had your money I'd have an F350 to do my towing with.
I don't so I don't and I make do with what I have and I make damn sure it's safe first.
Just like every other poor bastard out there.
Telling them that it's UNSAFE is wrong and you know it.[/QUOTE]
[Like I said I do have a p/u to tow with and I'm lucky, and I said I'm sure you can tow if you do it right. But I would only tow a small load (ie) a lawn mower, this is just my opinion on it the op asked a good ? ,and for an opinion on if you could tow with an xj safely. There's no need to argue about peoples opinions is there. You know there will always be to sides.I'm sure the op is old enough to figure it out with all the info here just give him some credit.Little fella was just to poke fun at ya.(but I didn't send anything to your mailbox??? wee bit confused there)
(I need more money though send checks to po box br549 west texas oil feilds.)

Are you suggesting that the Cherokee was designed and sold as a heavy hauler? The engineers and designers thought, when it was created, "Gee, I hope someone buys this and tries to pull something twice its weight over a long distance at freeway speeds"??
If that is what you are suggesting, your reasoning amazes me.
Howeer, you are indeed correct. It is possible to pull what you guys are pulling. Its obvious you can, you are doing so.
But is it smart? No. Just because you have driving talent doesn't mean what you are doing is smart.
Sure, you can put money into load levelers and all the extra equipment to make it safer, but its still not going to be as safe as other vehicles.
On that note, I'm also not suggesting that you go out and buy a brand new F350 for $50k. I never said that, I have no idea where you came up with that idea. Yet another you fabricate.
But you CAN find vehicles out there for less than $10K that would be much safer and better suited than these trucks.
I know this because my fiance and I are looking for one right now.
And if you can't afford to find a heavy hauler vehicle, how are you shelling out the cash for 23ft boats and car trailers and cars and all this other crap you are pulling?
