I was driving my wifes Jeep yesterday and I notice the brakes are just ok...not great...it's a totally stock Jeep Cherokee.

I wonder if there is something I can do to get a bit more bite....or more aggresive brakes?

Is there a pad or rotor that will give me more performance?

You can add discs to the rear. ZJ or Libby brakes are available for that upgrade.

its an 01? the booster you have is the very good. best two upgrades you can do are put some nice pads up front (the $40-50 ones from pep boys made a very noticeable difference over cheapies for me) and if you plan on keeping it semi-stock, throw discs on the D35. if you plan on building it a bit, dont, upgrade the rear first then put discs on it.

Yep 01. Thanks for the info...going to look at better pad and disc upgrade for the rear....I do have 10" drum now...which I assume is better than the 9" that is standard on most.

Good thing I have the c-clip rear axle...make the job of upgrading disc brakes easier.

Tire rack carries a few brake parks for Jeeps. I bought some rotors and pads from them and it made a great improvement over stock....its too much trouble to do a rear disc conversion. Just get some bad *** pads and rotors and you'll be fine...

I plan to get some good rotors (slotted or Drilled or both from a reputable company) and pads (hawk or EBC or something) for the front...but I still am kinda interested in using ZJ rear disc brakes and modding my XJ.

I need to take a day off of work and hit the JY and pull-a-part places...and see if I can find some treasures!

When ya do let me know what you find. I'd like to do a ZJ disc upgrade on a D35 just haven't had the time to check all the JY's. If you find anything let me know how much it costs ya.

Crown Auto makes a rear disk brake kit for Cherokees. http://www.crownautomotive.net/ Just get the right year and axle. Some do come w/hand brake cables and some do not. to me, this beats junkyards and ZJ parts, IMO.

Thread is 6 years old. However I've been looking at doing the conversion using KJ parts.

The fact is, the booster upgrade trumps the rear disc upgrade by about 3 times.

But, that's on 94 and older.

When I repaired my rear drum brakes with new hardware & pads, it gave a significant boost in power. I thought my brakes just sucked. #1 is always maintenance.

Don't bother with anything other than plain rotors. They will make no difference and impact pad life. Drilled are particularly bad.

As for pads, I recommend Hawk LTS.
