Default Any way to check trans fluid without running engine?

I dont know how much trans fluid it has in it, but I know its low. Is it safe to

let it idle up to temp and then check it? or is there any way to check it with

the engine off? I know it might sound like a silly question....

Thanks.

I doubt the trans will come up to temp with it just idling. Having it in D would help.

You can drain the pan and refill with 3.8 quarts. Then it won't be low. :-)

ATF expands with heat. This is why you check it when the transmission is warm. It heats up while driving. If you just let it idle until warm, the transmission may not get warm enough like it would while operating and your fluid level would check as low.

It is a bit of an odd question... Maybe you might add some details as to why you want to know the ATF level while not being able to drive the truck?

Below was taken, in part, from my Owner's Manual.

If the fluid level is off the end of the dipstick add just enough fluid to bring it up to just below the ADD line. It's easy to over fill it.

You'll still need to check the fluid level when it's up to operating temp.
