Default Any snow drivers using weight in the back?

So we finally got our first snowfall this year and im pumped! Ive only owned my XJ for about 2 months so ive never driven snow with it. Im also running BFG's AT's that are 10.5 inches wide so this thing is squirley in the snow. Does anyone put sandbags in the back and if so, how much weight. Thanks for the help ppl!

I don't. I just use the 4wd which takes care of the squirlyness. You could always use chains, too.

I hate BFG AT KOs in snow or wet conditions. (personal opinion)
I always toss 2x 25# weights in the back in winter, just to have a little extra traction.
My winter kit weighs a bit more though, as i always carry a bag of kitty littler or ice melt, a folding emergency shovel, a blanket, extra gloves, spare change of thermals, and an extra set of winter boots.

Had our first snow fall here and in 4wd with bald 235/45 tires it was a bit squirrely but not to the point of no driveability. No weight in the back. Hoping brand new BFG AT in 30x9.5 flavor take care of that.

x2 once you have it in 4wd your *** end will ride fine. I figure if im getting loose I either need to slow down or put power to all four. Weight just means you will get going faster before you start getting squirrelly I would think.

first of all congrats on getting the xj. second of all yes everyone that said use 4wd is right. but personally i like to see myself get through the white stuff in 2wd w/o struggling and that means putting some weight in the back. with me I have about 40lbs of tools in the back when I expect snowfall. plus 2 60lb sandbags (1 by each of the rear fenderwells)and it works great. now if you have to do and emergency stop all the extra weight doesnt help in fact it makes you slide more. so basically be a defensive driver and not tailgate and youd be fine with the extra weight.

I drive my 99 in the snow with a plow on the front and no added weight, always in 4wd though. It couldn't hurt if your girlfriend has a fat friend and you make her ride in the back though.

My jeep is fat with all the 3/16 " plate that is over the gas tank and rear bumper. Don't think I need anything extra.

I also drove a m1a1 tank in the army and it would slid and it was 67 tons.

4wd is the way to go in the snow. The fun part about an xj in the snow is getting squirly on purpose! Lol I always do have my heavy *** recovery box with my chains and straps and tools in the back. I suggest u do something like that with some sand too cause that come in handy. A cool trick I learned down south is keeping a roll of chain link fence cause if u get stuck you can feed it under your tires and crawl out. Works every time for me.

I usually throw a couple tires in the back... It makes a noticeable difference.

My XJ is just 2WD so I am one of those who does put weight in the back. I put 4 25lb plate weights back there and a 50 pound bag of Ice Melt. It makes a difference.

I just throw it in 4wd when I'm on ice or snow, like when coming off a highway to a local road. It can get a little squirrelly if it's just in 2wd.

Boy talk about squirly, I tried to slide a corner at the intersection at my school a LITTLE bit. I barely gave any gas and I was looking back at the stop sign! This was in my dad's XJ with 33x12.50 Hercules Durangos. Then I parked on our new snow pile
Subi_stout, I noticed you're from Syracuse, my aunt and uncle used to live out there. My uncle said they got an inch of snow and he was the only one at work that morning lol. How does the snow affect you guys nowadays?
