You can always do a super35 upgrade which will give you 30 spine axles and a locker. I plan on stickng with my D35 at least till an 8.25 comes along that's not $300+...

If this is primarily for street use, you may be fine.
Lite fire roads, snow, etc, you may be fine.
Beyond the above, driving skills tend to become more important.
I personally wouldn't recommend it, but there are folks that are very successful at doing this .

get a D44 or 29 spline 8.25 and be done with it. the 30 will hold up fine as long as you recognize its limits

the tj guys like the super 35 kit because to swap in any other axle you need to get $400 worth of brackets or fab your own, so its worth it to them. to get leaf perches and shock mounts on an xj axle takes little to no money. but even if you do swap money into the 35, all you do is move the weak link around and ultimately end up with a weak ring and pinion.

if you are going to wheel, dont put money in trash/junk. Around here in wa you can find deals on whole cherokees/chevs/ford that have way better axels i just picked up a running driving 78 chev 4x4 for $100 and you just got to ask no is beter than not asking

my friend was on 35x14.5 mickey thompsons for about two weeks with a 35..we were all just waiting for it to snap. hes got a 98 zj and was running 33s on the 35 for about half a year until he got the 35s. he trussed the 35 too. but now hes on an 8.8 and it cost about $450 to get brackets fabbed and welded to the 8.8. remember to match up your gears too with the new rear end. he just daily drove it on both the 33s and 35s..he wouldnt take it wheeling cause he was afraid as soon as it saw any mud or un-even terrain, it would blow up..haha

do most 8.8 axles have the same with as the 35 or do they need to get cut? and how about the breaks im probably just going to look for a 78 ish ford 250 and get the axles for that and take them to a shop but i would rather do my self.
