Went out this morning to start my 99 xj and it wouldn't fire. It turns over just great but doesn't get running. The fuel pump makes it signature noise when i turn the ignition to "on" position. My gauges all work properly, with the voltage meter running ok. the battery and connections are all fine. and it even fired once and quickly died. This is the first problem I have ever had with it. Checked all fuses (dont think this would be problem anyway) those are fine. so...where do i start, i would really hate to have to tow it to a shop.

I would start by doing some actual diagnosing before tossing parts at it.

Check for spark. And just because you hear the pump doesnt mean its providing GOOD fuel pressure.

Maybe its the coil? Maybe its...well, plenty of things. Check it out first, dont waste money.
