I'm installing a new deck in a 93 Sport to replace the factory unit. I was also going to replace the door and rear speakers at the same time with JBL GTO527, which are 5 1/4". The same speaker is available in a 6 1/2" for the same price. From reading on here about speaker installation, I'm not sure whether a 6 1/2" will fit with little or no modification, or not.
Also, does anyone have any experience using these speakers? There's only so much you can do with side firing speakers buried at the bottom of a door, so I'm not expecting"great" sound, just better. BTW, they're $65 a pair online.
Thanks
ETA I can find them now for $58 shipped.

from what i have gather doing my speaker research for my wish list...some 6.5" speakers will fit with a little trimming but the depth of the speaker is where you need to pay attention to.

Yea, that's what I gather, and there even seems to be differences between a 93 and a 98, at least from what Crutchfield lists. I'd like to put 6 1/2" in the front doors, but don't want to to order them and tear the panels off to find they won't fit.
The one thing I liked about the JBL's was that they're 2 ohm, so there's a little "free" boost there in efficiency.

i have 6x9 in my hatch. they took quite a bit of cutting, but they are pointed right to the seats and project a ton of sound, way worth it. they were in it when i bought it. i like having the bigger speaker, especially since it is a three way. 6x9 is another option that does fit.
BTW mine is a 92

I have Infinity 6022i Reference 6.5s in my doors and the soundbar I added to my '92 XJ. The Infinitys fit in the doors with a bit of hole adjustment with a hammer.
But man oh man. Those 6022i speakers sound AWESOME. Seriously.
Best buy had em on sale for $110 but I snagged 2 pairs on eBay for $50 each with a 4 year warranty and free shipping. I highly recommend them and anyone who has been in my XJ agrees.
You can get 6.5s in the doors but only 5.25s in the hatch.

I'm about to put some nice Kenwood 3 way 6x9s in my rear hatch. I've got those and a pair of matching kenwood 5-1/4" for the front doors.
I found a template that prints out full size 6x9 here:
