Default another no start thread

my search hasnt turned up anything under my circumstances.
did a head gasket swap on my friends 89 xj. all back together except for no coolant in the system yet. we have tried to fire but get no start. cranks, have fuel, have spark. thought about cps but ran great before we started. i can here it actually fire on a cylinder or two durring the crank but it wont fire up and idle.

yesterday i thought it was valve lash, but with a little research i discovered you cant actually adjust them. everything is back togther how it should be. my mind is just warped on this. while we had it appart we also did dist cap and bug, wires, plugs.

if any more info is needed let me know.
suggestions?

yeah. at first we missed the cps connection because the plug fell back onto the bell housing. plugged it in and you could here it actually fire sometimes.
we have double and triple checked. the biggest issue i think was air hoses though. even with pictures it took a long time to get everything back together.

first try he did. but i told him not to pump the pedal after we tried cranking the first time, in fear of it just flooding with gas.
