I need to put a used motor in a 96 Cherokee. From what I can tell, a 96-98 long block would be ideal. Preliminary research also suggests that the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee blocks do not share the same holes for accessory brackets, etc., but I'd love for this to be wrong.
So, my final question is: what year 4.0L long blocks can I use in a '96 Cherokee, and does it matter what specific vehicle I'm pulling it from? I'll be reusing all of the accessories from the '96.
On edit--we're using the 5-speed tranny, so if I need to be aware of any pilot bearing changes, that would be very helpful as well.

You are correct on the Grand Cherokee, any 91+ Block will work but 96-99 is the best bet, 91-95 you will have to swap sensors, and power steering bracket and block off the temp sensor on the back of the head, although some say 96s still had this sensor.

Thanks. So Grand Cherokee motors are out of the question period, right? Swapping accessories, brackets, manifolds, and sensors is no problem. As long as there are bolt holes for the '96 XJ parts, I don't care.
