Another Death Wobble story-2001 XJ
My 01 XJ has 168K on it, bought it in late April. Tires are Goodyear Wranglers that were almost new when I bought it.
I replaced all four shocks over the summer just because it looked like the originals were there. It made the ride a bit tighter and smoother for sure.
I replaced the steering stabilizer about 3 weeks ago as it looked original too. About a week after that, death wobble started. Typical symptoms and then some: hit a bump at 50-60 mph and it felt like it was about to shake apart. Also, you could count on it happening when I braked coming off the highway on an exit ramp as I knew the rotors were warped but the pads were almost new(a ******* brake job from PO).
I took it to a guy who knows jeeps and DW. Ball joints, track bar, bushings, steering box all tight. Rotors had about an inch of total braking surface on the insides. Never saw rotors that bad. Front end was out of alignment and right front tire was out of balance by an ounce.
Cure for this case:
-new rotors and pads
-alignment
-balanced and rotated all tires
Death wobble cured.
Don't overlook the rotors as at least the trigger and the tire and alignment issues as well.
