Default Analog instrument cluster question

OK..I have a 1994 Cherokee..4.0 auto..Untill recently I had the typical instrument cluster in my dash with the lights that just come on when a problem arises..I wanted the analog gauges as I like seeing what`s going on..Went to the junkyard and found a '92 with the analog instrument cluster and after verifying that the 92 and 94 had the same plug-in for the panel and all the same color wires in the same order I bought it and swapped mine out...For the most part it worked out fine except the temp gauge and oil pressure gauges don`t work right...The temperature gauge doesn`t move at all and the oil gauge instantly goes up to the top as soon as I start up.

Now just to maybe aid in someones problem solving here`s a brief breakdown on what the gauges do in each key position: In the OFF position the temp gauge is just above to 100 degree mark and the oil sits about the 80 mark (Which is the higest number)...In the ON position both settle down to their lowest points...As I cranking the engine to START the temp gauge tops out and the oil remains at the low point...Then with the Jeep RUNNING the temp gauge falls back to the lowest point and stays there and the oil gauge pegs up to the highest point.

So, Any ideas from that?...Maybe an incompatability between the 92 and 92 clusters? (Although I later found the same cluster in a '95 at another junkyard with the same wiring)..Maybe just 2 bad gauges?.. Here`s an idea.. Maybe reverse the gauges?..The reason I ask that is because for some reason even though it`s the same electrical plug and same wires going into the instrument cluster in the same order somehow it knows that the fuel gauge is now down in the lower left corner instead of being the big gauge and that now the big gauge is a tachometer and no longer a fuel gauge.

Thanks in advance.

You need to swap in the oil and temp sending units for actual gauges. There are two part#'s dependant on gauges or "idiot lights"

Did you swap out the temp and oil sending units? The sending units for cars with gauges are different from the ones for "idiot" lights only. If you haven't, that is your problem - a cheap, easy fix.

I think the sending unit is different for the dummy lights
so you will need to change them to the one for a gage

Ah..I see..Thanks for the quick replies!..You guys are the best!

Now..I`m still puzzled..HOW did the new instrument cluster know that the fuel gauge was now a tachometer and that the fuel gauge was now the little gauge down in the corner (Which was nothing in the "idiot light" version) when all the wires were still going the same places?

the wires change in the instrument cluster to the right spot
every thing stays the same in the weiring harness
that was they don't need a different harness for every dash configuration

OK..I was curious because before I made the swap I had the two clusters sitting side by side and could have sworn I traced the wires and they still went the same place as far as gauges but I may gave missed a junction since it seems to be just those two
