Anyway to confirm this? Would it really sound like a rock being tossed around in the engine?

When I say confirm, what can I do to go out and check to make sure there is a leak?

So, I just got back my from my mechanic. Turns out the noise I am hearing is my exhaust leak getting worse. There is a well-defined crack nearly all the way around the collector.

Hello I had a similar noise on my 97' XJ and I narrowed down to a slightly blowing exh manifold One off the studs had snapped so I retapped and fitted a new bolt. Job done. Ps the ticking noise would go after ten minutes as the manifold would heat up and expand and so close up the space. Hope this helps.
