Get a powermaster alternator. Probably spend half of the money of the mean green, otherwise the old delco-tron is really easy and cheap to get rebuilt

Any alternator (except the very new special-purpose ones - like the two alternators in a Ford-built ambulance...) can be upwound, it's just a matter of finding parts. The more common the piece in use, the more likely you can have it upwound.

Here's Rod's price list - although I need to talk to him to expand it. You're interested in the Delco CS alternators (the Delco SI was for the very early XJ - 1984-1986 - and the Nippondenso is for the later 1991-2001XJ.) This should give you some idea of what to expect.
