I always prefer a quality rebuilt alternator. My local shop does much better work than the vatozone ones that are reman'd in Mexico.

 

It's funny because I kind of like the sound! It really does sound like a supercharger. I'd leave it if the whine didn't indicate eminent failure.

Right now I'm trying to decide if I should attempt to rebuild it, myself, or pay someone to do it. I dislike paying people to do things I can do myself when I have the time to do them, and I do have the time.

 

I got a rebuilt 105 amp Delco Remy for $55. There was no core so I'm going to rebuild my old one as a 135 amp and keep it as a spare.

 

The older XJ's that the forest service ordered had 140 or 150 amp on them as they were delivered to them from Jeep.
