My 96 was bought about a year ago with 145000 miles on her looking good. About a month ago i backed her out and saw the volt guage pegged. I put my meter on and it was overcharging. I took the alt. off and had it tested ok. I came here and read up on everything i could find and redid all grounds. Everything seemed fine untill yesterday, pegged the volt guage again. It started charging correctly after i got home.I came back here and read up on the green wire that goes from the alt to the ECM to trigger the field so i spent the day checking ohms and wire looms, all checked ok so i put her back together and low and behold it was acting up in my shop pegging the volt guage. Not knowing really what to do i shut her off and took off the leads off of the alternator, the field wires and the ground strap, and put what would be the green wire withthe orange stripe or the power to the alt back to its terminal on the alternator and you could tell it was goong full output.. Long story short, the other terminal is shorted to thealt body. Took the alt to be tested, was bad for sure this time. Got a new alt fitted in and all is well.
