Default Alternator 87-90 vs. 90-01

Hello all,

I think I've narrowed down that my Cherokee needs and alternator. I replaced the battery, and a few days later it ran down. I charged the battery, then the same thing happened a few days later.

Anyways, I've got a friend-of-a-friend that's going to give me an alternator from an 89 Cherokee, but mine's a 92. I was looking at Quadratec's website (for reference) and Quadratec seperates 87-90, from 91-01. Also, according to their site, they're the same amperage.

What gives, are the two interchangable? Is the bolt pattern different, will I need his bracket too?

Thanks in advance!!!

Quadratec seperates almost everything by Renix(87-90) and HO(91-01)...
Check at one of the online auto parts site. O'Riellys or GhettoZone both offer really good parts look-ups. You can just compare respective part numbers

I dont see why it wouldnt work unless the connector is different, then you would need to splice that in.

Great suggestion - yet the "easy" thing to do!!
However, I did so and of coarse, the part numbers are different . . .

Andrew, that's a thought. I don't really lose anything by snagging this guy's alt. I just didn't want to have it in my head it'd be an easy fix, only to be let down when it doesn't. . . .

Goto a JY and get the Alt from an 98 GC...They come with a 136 amp Alt and it's a direct bolt on.. A whole lot better then the 90 am XJ's..

IIRC they are all interchangeable but the later models had a higher output. That is why AZ etc, have different part numbers. Renix era were 90 amp and the H.O. were 110 amp up to 130 amp. The GC 4.0L had a 135 amp and will also interchange.
