Default Alternator?

87 waggy 4.0

Rain, horrible squealing noise, burned rubber smell through vents, alternator indicator and dash lights went dark.

There was no change in power steering or oil pressure, so I'm guessing the alternator is kaput.

Does that sound right or is there something else I should be checking?

Thanks in advance!

It sounds about right. You can pull the belt and give the alt a spine and see if it spins free. Or take it to any auto parts store and have them bench test it. While you are at it take the battery with you and have them do a load test. If the alt is starting to seize change your belt since you said that you could smell rubber burning. Do yourself a big favor make sure to clean all of the grounding point while you are taking care of everything else.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

I've done alts on other cars, but none with a serp belt. And all alts were on top.

Haynes is indicating I only need to loosen the alt adjustment bots to release tension on the belt.

Is that the case with an 87?

Tips, tricks or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Not a problem. The one thing that I forgot to mention. When you have the belt off make sure that none of the other pulleys are loose or the pulley bearing don't feel like the are no spinning smooth. One last thing on our Jeep 4.0's the belt does have to be pretty tight. If it' not tight enough it WILL be pretty loud. More the likely you will have to re=tighten the belt in 1 or 2 weeks ones the belt stretches. It is a pretty straight forward change out. Good Luck and let us know how it worked out for you. It's always nice to know the outcome.
