Aisin-Warner AX15 5-speed manual
Is this a good tranny for a 4.0? I know they put them in jeeps with 4.0 but i was just wondering if they hold up being that they use them for the 2.5 aswell?

2.5 used the AX5 which is wont last behind the 4.0L
4.0 used AX15 which is a great 5sp trans. My buddy runs one behind his 4.5L stroker in a YJ and has one behind a mildly built 360 v8 in his cj5. Ive never heard of one blowing up but i do have one at home that wont stay in 1st gear. Trans + muddy water = bad news but free trans for me

yea alittle bit, my 2nd and 3rd syncos are worn out but i can still shift it fine by either double clutching it or slowly easing it into gear.
2nd gear on AX15's are alittle goofy. I drove a newer low milage TJ with the same trans and same issue. 2nd gear can be alittle tricky to get into sometimes, like if you run it up mildly (2300-3000 rpms) in 1st then try to shift into 2nd but it wont go and you have to shift up to 3rd. I get much better shift if i dont run 1st up past 2k rpms, usually like 1500 does great
