I have a 97 Xj that just blew its drivers side airbag in my face when I turned the ignition on. The vehicle was literally sitting in the driveway cold when I turned the key and the bag blew. Any ideas on why? And I guess I need to fix it so what are my options?

I bought this XJ a few months ago as a project and I’ve been able to fix a ton of issues thanks to this forum. This was the first search that didn’t turn up any relevant results, so I bit the bullet and created an account.

Man if that isn't some daffy duck sh**.

I really don't think there's any way that can happen unless you have some wires shorted somewhere. I'd check the clockspring and maybe see if someone has tampered with the impact switch.

Sorry that happened though. I'll admit, I may have giggled a little when I read this, but I know that isn't funny when it happens. Glad you're OK though.

It had been running and driving for over 24 hours without breaking down on me so I should have known something was about to blow.

I noticed an electrical burning smell when I got in before I started it. Also the steering wheel was warm the whole drive home so an electrical short seems right. I had to drop the steering wheel to fix the heater core a few weeks ago, but I only removed the bracket and rested the wheel on the drivers seat.

At this point I guess I’m just trying to figure out my options. Junk yard? I guess I need a whole wheel right?

Ok, so in the 97-99* (maybe 98) they put the airbag module on the floor under the driver seat. Its a bad place as it does tend to get wet etc from time to time. They later moved it up under the center console. Its likely the module has gotten corroded.

You'll have to replace the airbags and the module as well as clean the connector and I suggest relocate it.

A youtube on exactly your problem.

Good thing you weren't leaning forward. It would suck to get killed by a wiring fault.

If it was mine I'd get a cover, leave the hand grenade out and wear my belt 100%.

Both the mice and water damage ideas seem plausible. The jeep sat in a field for a few years so it definitely housed some rodents. Corrosion due to moisture seems very likely. I was planning to pull the carpet next weekend anyways. It’s been in the garage out of the elements since thanksgiving but the carpet padding is still wet.

Appreciate the insight and the video. At least I know how I can remove the bag until I can find a replacement. It might be a while before I willingly drive around with a bomb in front of my face.
