An intake isn't going to help you that much, unless you dedicate the time and effort to make a true CAI. Even then you won't see much of an increase

you'd see a 10hp increase at best, and thats being really optimistic

Is the air in a "true CAI" cooled below ambient temp before it enters the engine? How is this done?

No, its not cooled before it enters the engine. alot of ppl throw a cone filter on and call it a "CAI" when its actually a WAI(warm air intake) As common sense says, the air in the engine bay is warmer than ambient temps, outside temps. a true CAI takes air from outside the engine bay that is cooler and thus provides a denser air charge and helps you make a little bit more power.

Personally If you're going to be doing any kind of deepwater wheeling I would get a snorkle. Otherwise I would do this for a standard offroad rig: http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoAirFilter.htm

THOSE AREN'T CAI. read my post above before you try and argue with me bout it. They are warm air intakes with large pore cone filters.

They do increase performance, but not enough to be worth the price IMO. and they're not CAI, because at the end of the day they still take air from inside the engine bay.

A much better upgrade would be to find the intake from a 99 or newer 4.0 and swap that in. I've read of those gaining you as much as 25 horses and the same TQ while leaving everything else stock. Not only will you get more power but they're cheaper too. pretty much the cost of a new intake/exhaust gasket and the $50 or so for the intake.
