Default Air Conditioning Question

I had a new compressor, etc installed last year, and unfortunately it is out of warranty...

Anyway, the problem is I am now getting warm air instead of cold. I tried to fill it with R-134A and the needle on the gauge kept dropping from overfilled, to low and then back and forth. Not exactly sure of the problem, or the part that needs to get replaced. Anybody with help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bear with me because i am gonna have to try to understand what you are doing and what the jeep is doing.

Used to blow cold air then it is warm...okay had a new compressor installed now out of warranty. You put in R134a and it goes from overfilled to low.

First of all what makes you think you need freon added?

Have you used any stop leak stuff?

When you added freon did you add it to the low side and with the compressor running?

Does the AC compressor run at all? If so any weird noises or grinding noises?

Does your AUX electric fan switch on when you turn the AC on?

Answer these questions and i will get back with you.

I mostly wanted to use the gauge on the freon to check the levels. I put some in and still warm air.

The gauge said low, then goes to overfilled, then drops back to low, then back up to overfilled, over and over

The R-134A had stop leak in it

Yes I added it to the correct port

It the a/c compressor does run, and you can hear it engaging, no weird noises or grinding

I ran the Jeep for a few minutes and the AUX fan never turned on (not sure how long I would have to run it)

I appreciate your help

What year is your Jeep and motor size pls.

Nevermind I see your cherokee 2000..

Okay our AC system works by a fixed orifice tube system.

Following parts condenser, accumulator, evaporator, fixed orifice tube, compressor/clutch, oil, o-rings and hoses.

My guts tells me your accumulator is plugged up especially the build in filter/drier inside. Unfortunately you added the stop leak which only aggravated the problem. You will need to replace the following AC oil, orifice tube, O-ring seals, freon R134a and accumulator. You will have to do a complete system flush to remove all the stop leak stuff and the oil. If you were in AZ, I would take care of it for you.

Once you have the system repaired please do not add seal stopper for any reason and it is the worse thing you can do to the system.

Well I appreciate the help. Not sure if I can tackle this myself (currently in a live in police academy for 12 weeks)

How much do you think a shop would charge, estimation at best.

depending on what parts got fouled by the stop leak, your price may vary.

I have been doing research on my busted AC, and an evacuation, a new orifice, accumulator/dryer, and compressor, cleaning everything else out, putting it back together and refilling will run about 800 to 1000 around here.

Yeah, if the gauge on the can is moving like that, it is your compressor turning on and off. Save your self some bucks, and take it to a shop to diag it. We need to know the low and high side pressures, weather your electric fan is turning on, and feel how warm/cold the high and low side lines are getting. Are the lines getting cold going into the evaporator?
