Air conditioning issue

i have 98 XJ. When i run the air conditioning, sometimes it starts out cooling, then throws warm air. Would this be an evaporator problem? Its often hit and miss with cooling then warm air. Sometimes it will work just fine and cool the whole time i am in the vehicle. Looking for suggestions to locate the problem.

Does the compressor cycle?

The compressor does cycle. A friend added some freon to see if that would help. Didnt do much.

I would bring it in to have the freon and oil checked. Or at the very least buy/rent the high/low gauges and hook them up. There's a lot of info online about what the right pressures are and how to troubleshoot.
