Default Air conditioning on a 1991 XJ

I'm looking at buying a 1991 XJ here in town, and it doens't have air conditioning. The owner says it was never installed on it. Does that sound right? Also, how hard and expensive would it be to install? Thanks, Tom.

A/C was an option. It would be about $1200 to have a new A/C kit installed by an A/C shop. Unless this XJ was super clean with low mileage, I would look for one with A/C already installed and working.

Yeah, there's plenty with A/C out there.
