Default aill 29 spline axles fit in a 27 spline housing?

I know the carriers would have to be changed. Reason for asking is I just bought a 29 spline 8.25 with a trac lok posi im going to swap into my rig soon and I wanted to build my current 8.25 (27 spline) with 4.88's and a detroit locker. Question is can I put a 29 spline detroit unit in a 27 spline housing then just swap axles from a 29 spline later model axle or is there more to it than that?
