Default Advice on buying a Cherokee

OK so I am in the market for my very first Cherokee. I don't know much about them and have a few questions.

First off I can't spend more than $4000. Maybe a little over only if I find a great one. I'm not picky about the year as long as it is '91 or newer. I would like a 4x4 but it isn't really that important. I have no preference between 2 or 4 door. So here are my questions...

How important is mileage? Should I try to stay under a certain amount of mileage or should I focus more on how it was maintained?

I love driving manual trans. but wouldn't mind an auto... is there a certain tranny i should try to avoid?

Is there anything I should specifically look for when I test drive a Cherokee that I like? Are there any common problems that I should check up on?

Does this http://houston.craigslist.org/ctd/1196569446.html look like something worth looking at?

Thanks

I think you should go take a look at this one. Looks to be in good shape inside and out, plus low mileage for the year. Drive it, and if it drives well, try to talk them down some. With the car market the way it's been recently, you should be able to get some more out of them.

I have a 94, and I recommend that you get a 97+, without ABS. That way you get alot of upgrades that pre97's don't. If I did it over again I would have saved alot of money and time by getting a newer xj first.

Thanks for the replies. I can't wait to get my first xj. I haven't been this excited in a while. All my previous cars have been hatchbacks, which I love, but this will be nice for a change.

First I will need to sell my car which I will be lucky to get $4000 for. I will let you all know what I find and decide to get. Hopefully I can be a new member to the xj family.

Just stay away from 2000 and 2001... Ive been lucky so far, but they have the 0331 head that is prone to cracking between cyls. 3 and 4.

I would get a 97-99 if i could do it again
