Hi guys, I'm new to this website and would appreciate some advice. I have a UK spec 2000 Cherokee Orvis 4.0. After a long run at speed, when I come to a complete stop I am finding that when I take my foot off the brakes and pull away again there is a clonk clonk noise from the front end. The brakes have just been checked over and overhauled as I thought these may have been binding, but the problem remains. Does anyone have any thought or suggestions on what this could be?

The pads are "walking" a little in between the upper/lower slides as soon as you lift off the whoa pedal then start rolling, or else the calipers are floating just a touch more than they should. Either of these could cause it. Are you the only one who hears it? - knock knock - who's there?

 

The noise is quite loud and you can feel the vibrations through the car.

Would this be dangerous or is it just an annoyance?

Check the bolts that hold the calibers in mine snapped n did the same thing

No brake issue should be treated as an annoyance. Lives may be placed at risk.

 

The way you are describing it is this happens only when you hit the gas. Not necessarily just letting of the brakes and letting the Jeep accelerate on its own (obviusly very slow acceleration). But hitting the gas pedal and getting the clunk noise sounds like a joint or bushing is bad.

Check these to start you off.

1. Check to make sure your tranny and engine mounts are good and rubber isn't split or broken.
2. Check you front axle U-joints for play
3. Check U-joints in the rear drive shaft
4. Make sure the exhaust is not hitting anywhere during acceleration. (this happened to me and drove me nuts)
5. Check Lower control arms for not only play but see if the metal sleeve in the bushing that mounts to the uni-rail seperated from the bushing.

Hi, the clonk clonk noise does also happen when you just take your foot off the brake and crawl forward also. I have found that take the car out of gear, leaving your foot off the brake while stationary and then just pulling away, does alleviate the problem. It doesn't occur if you're just driving around town, only when you've been driving at speed for a while and then come to a complete stop.

this is the slip yoke on the rear driveshaft. they get dry and bind up, when your stopping it rotates the pinion pulling the slip yoke out a little, (that and the suspension unloading some) when you let off the brake or accelerate the rea settles back down and the pinion comes back pushing the shaft back in.
Remove the rear shaft, clean the splines on the output of the transfer case and grease it real well.

 

Do you hear the noise at all speeds or does it go away at higher speeds. You mentioned a "clonk clonk" noise. I'm wondering if it's just 2 clonks or the entire time driving.

 

Sounds like the front driveshaft has a bad u-joint!

 

Hi, there are usually 3 or 4 clonks and it goes again.

 

I'm putting my money on exhaust hitting something.

 

The noise is definately comming from the front wheels.

 

X2 on JCKustom's suggestion regarding front half-shaft u-joints. They definitely deserve inspection. I'm still thinking it could be the brakes but the u-joints are so close to the wheel that they're another potential source.

You may as well get your front end checked-out too. Once it's on a lift then all these things will be easily inspected.
